Integrity and ethics
Our editorial standards and policies are public. This page gives an overview; the complete policies are published on the website of each journal.
Checks before peer review
Before a manuscript is sent to reviewers, it is checked for:
- Scope: fit with the aims and scope of the journal.
- Reporting guidelines: the appropriate checklist for the article type (e.g. CONSORT-AI, TRIPOD+AI, STARD-AI, PRISMA).
- Statistical reporting: effect sizes and confidence intervals alongside p-values; complete model-evaluation metrics.
- Figures: resolution, legibility and image integrity.
- Data and code: availability statements.
- Research integrity: text overlap, duplicate submission, citation of retracted work and anonymisation for double-blind review.
Some of these checks are software-assisted. All editorial decisions are made by human editors and documented in line with COPE guidance.
Policies
Editorial independence
Editorial decisions are independent of commercial considerations. Reviewers suggested by authors are screened for conflicts of interest and do not determine the outcome.
Generative AI
Authors must disclose the use of generative AI tools. AI tools cannot be listed as authors and are not used to make editorial decisions.
Corrections and retractions
Corrections, expressions of concern and retractions follow COPE guidance and are published transparently.
